Testosterone for Men
Testosterone functions in numerous ways to promote maximal fitness and health in men. It is an anabolic or building hormone which increases muscle strength and lean body mass, decreases abdominal fat, stimulates new bone formation, strengthens the heart and blood vessels, lowers total cholesterol and blood sugar, raises HDL ("good") cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, improves tissue oxygenation, and improves the health of a non-cancerous prostate gland. Testosterone is critical for optimal brain function because it strengthens mental sharpness, concentration, and memory. It enhances energy and promotes a feeling of contentment.
Testosterone increases sexual desire, improves erections and is a natural antidepressant. Testosterone level in males peaks at age 25 and declines 1% to 2% per year thereafter. As men age, testosterone can be further diminished by conversion to estrogen and by the increased production of sex binding globulins which bind testosterone making it unusable. Loss of testosterone in males can increase the chances of atherosclerosis and heart attacks, obesity, fatigue, depression, Alzheimer’s dementia osteoporosis and Parkinson’s disease.
